Description
Accommodation

KNAUS Campingpark Meppen in the heart of the Emsland is a holiday paradise for the whole family. Situated directly on the unspoilt banks of the river Ems, the 3 hectare site is the perfect place to go for all bathing fans and water rats. Whether canoe, kayak or motorboat: at the rental stations in the surrounding area all leisure skippers will find the right vehicle. Even stand-up paddlers will find perfect conditions for extended tours through the idyllic nature on the Ems and Hase rivers.

The public pool Meppen is located in the direct vicinity of the campsite. With its spacious indoor and outdoor pools, it guarantees top-class bathing fun for young and old in all weathers. After an eventful day full of action and adventure, the adjacent wellness area with steam sauna, whirlpool and heated loungers offers pure relaxation.

The old fortified town of Meppen is only a few hundred metres away from the camping park. You can explore it comfortably on a bike or on foot. Various interesting guided tours to the historical sights are offered seasonally by the local tourist information office. The numerous shops, cafés and the weekly market invite you to take an extensive stroll through the historic city centre during day and night time.

Near Meppen, Hase, Nordradde and the more than 100-year-old Dortmund-Ems Canal reach the Ems and create unique and varied natural landscapes. You have the best view from the vantage point in the nature reserve "Borkener Paradies". Marvel at the dune landscapes, floodplain forests and moors from there and let yourself be enchanted by this special natural experience.

Excursions

Go on a journey of discovery into the Stone Age and visit the megaliths in the immediate vicinity of Meppen or one of the 33 other historical sites along the "Road of Megalithic Culture". The up to 5,000 year old mystical tombs are all freely accessible and still bear witness to the highly developed burial culture of early man.

Cyclists will get their money's worth in the varied and unspoilt countryside along the German-Dutch border: the 3,500-kilometre-long network of cycle paths includes more than 50 routes with absolute flatland guarantee. Those who prefer to plan their route themselves can use the free app from the tourist office, the "Emsland Routenplaner". Here you will find up-to-date maps with valuable tips for  refreshment sites and up to date  road works information

There is also a wide range of offers for hiking enthusiasts in the Emsland region, offering the right route for every requirement. On many newly established hiking trails and old pilgrims' paths, adventurous holidaymakers can, for example, explore the "Hümmling" nature park with its vast forests, rolling hills and historic mills in detail.

A very special highlight is the cross-border nature park "Moor-Veenland". In this special cultural landscape in the border area between Germany and the Netherlands there are not only various moors and nature reserves with a unique flora and fauna but also exciting museums for young and old to visit. In the Emsland Moor Museum, visitors can learn all there is to know about peat extraction and its development in two modern exhibition halls using maps, film documents and machines. You can really immerse yourself in the hard life of peat farmers with the whole family in the Dutch open-air museum Veenpark. There is a lot to discover on a total of 160 hectares: look over the craftsmen's shoulders, make a real peat cutting yourself or take a tour with the light railway and the moor ship.
